Matt StairsMatt Stairs, baseball’s best-known bench player, is working on another record. Already his is the record for most pinch hit home runs, with 23 of his career 263 bombs coming off the bench. What he’s also known for is his long resume. He’s held jobs with 12 major league baseball teams since he began in 1992, tying the record held by Mike Morgan, Ron Villone and even Deacon McGuire, who played in the 19th century.

Cliff LeeThe Philadelphia Phillies may be the first team in history to go 162-0. In a stunning turn of events, Cliff Lee, the offseason’s most sought-after free agent, has opted to return to Philly to join Roy Halladay, Cole Hamels and Roy Oswalt in the starting rotation. We’ve seen phenomenal threesomes in the past, but a group of four like this comes around once a generation. Hamels may be the number four starter on this team, which is incredible, considering he’d be an ace for half of the other teams in baseball.

Rick DiPietroThings are not going very well for the New York Islanders these days. They have a league-worst 15 points and it doesn’t look like anything will improve anytime soon. The team is having trouble winning inter-squad games, and the frustration of that is starting to boil over into contests that count. Once these kinds of negative emotions get into a player’s head, it’s almost impossible to get them out, and it certainly looks like the entire team has them.

Linus OmarkThere seems to be an outbreak of young, cocky players in the NHL, and a lot of the stern veterans don’t seem to like it. First, P.K. Subban of the Canadiens was benched for his aggressive, take-no-crap-from-anybody style of play combined with the fact that he actually has thoughts inside his hockey player head that he’s willing to share. Now, Edmonton’s Linus Omark – a Swedish phenom – made his NHL debut against Tampa Bay on Friday night, and won the game by using a spin-a-rama move to throw off the goalie before netting the winning goal in a shootout.

Ilya KovalchukThe New Jersey Devils’ season is probably already over. They are convincingly the second-worst team in the league in the standings, marginally ahead of the New York Islanders. Even if they turned things around, the Devils would still easily be the most disappointing team this season. They can’t win at home. They can’t win on the road. They can’t score goals at all. General Manager Lou Lamoriello put all of his eggs into one basket this past summer, and it seems he may have dropped the basket to the floor.

Scott DownsIf you haven’t heard of Scott Downs, you’re not the only one. But you will. The 34-year-old left-handed reliever just reached a deal with the Los Angeles Angels, agreeing to a three-year, $15 million contract that will see Downs ship out of Canada for the first time since 2000. Downs made his MLB debut with the Cubs, but joined the Expos partway through the season, then moved to Toronto in 2005 and has been there ever since.

Josh HamiltonThe MLB Rule 5 Draft is a peculiar thing. Teams choose to not offer contracts to some of their free agents, saying they need to keep room on their 40-man rosters for the Rule 5 Draft, and then on draft day, they don’t fill up the empty slots, claiming they need to keep a few positions open to sign free agents before Spring Training. Thursday saw this year’s draft come and go to close the Winter Meetings, and as usual, nobody noticed.

Zack GreinkeZack Greinke’s new uniform has been one of the biggest non-stories of the Winter Meetings. The Royals aren’t interested in playing their ace until Cliff Lee chooses a new home. There’s a lot of benefit in waiting for Lee to make up his mind, as most teams are interested in Lee before Greinke anyway. Once Lee’s off the market, Greinke becomes America’s most wanted and the Royals can barter for as much as they want. They’ll find a buyer willing to overpay somewhere.

Carl CrawfordThe Boston Red Sox have signed Carl Crawford, arguably the top position player free agent this offseason. The addition of Crawford, to go along with the recent trade for Adrian Gonzalez will be a major boost to the Red Sox's offense that has a legitimate top of the line-up hitter and a big-time middle of the order hitter and run producer. Crawford reportedly signed with the Red Sox for seven years and $142 million.

Urban MeyerUrban Meyer has decided to call it quits, officially leaving the University of Florida Gators without a head football coach. Meyer was a successful coach that helped the Gators win a BCS National Championship, but had a relatively bad season in 2010, finishing 7-5 and performing as in previous seasons. Meyer has health issues that previously threatened his availablity to coach the team and led to a Brett Favre-like back and forth on whether or not he was coming back to coach the team or leaving entirely. Should people consider this latest announcement to be the final one or will the back and forth ensue? For now, Meyer is out of the Gators picture.
